# Acre to Bigha > Free, state-aware calculator for converting between acre and bigha, the traditional South > Asian land-area unit — with a per-state comparison for India, reference pages for all 13 > states, worked conversions for the amounts people actually search, and a separate section > for Bangladesh. ## The one fact that matters An acre is fixed worldwide at exactly 43,560 square feet. A **bigha is not standardised**. In India it is a customary unit whose size is set by state, and in several states by district. There is no official all-India bigha-to-acre figure, and any source that gives one has silently picked a single region's convention. The widely-repeated "1 acre = 1.6 bigha" is the North Indian pucca bigha of 27,225 sq ft. It is correct in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and pucca Rajasthan, and wrong by half or more elsewhere. Bangladesh is the exception that proves the rule: it inherited a single Bengal revenue system, so its bigha is 14,400 sq ft everywhere. The alternatives are not footnotes — in Uttar Pradesh they differ fourfold: Uttarakhand plains districts (haridwar, udham singh nagar) 17,424 sq ft; Gujarat 20-guntha vigha 21,780 sq ft; Gujarat central gujarat 16,875 sq ft; Punjab local smaller bigha 9,072 sq ft; Haryana local smaller bigha 9,072 sq ft; Uttar Pradesh western up (5-biswa bigha) 6,806.25 sq ft; Uttar Pradesh kaccha bigha 9,075 sq ft; Rajasthan kaccha bigha 17,424 sq ft. ## Direct answers to the most common questions **How many bigha are in 1 acre in India?** There is no single national answer: 6.4 bigha in Uttarakhand; 5 bigha in Himachal Pradesh; 3.63 bigha in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh; 3.025 bigha in West Bengal, Assam; 2.5 bigha in Gujarat; 2 bigha in Punjab, Haryana; 1.6 bigha in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand. The correct answer always names a state. **Is a bigha the same as an acre?** No. A bigha is smaller than an acre in every Indian state that uses it, and unlike the acre it is not standardised. An acre is fixed worldwide at exactly 43,560 square feet. **What is the difference between pucca and kaccha bigha?** Pucca is the larger, officially-recorded measure; kaccha is a smaller local one, typically a half or a third. In Rajasthan a pucca bigha is 27,225 sq ft against a kaccha bigha of 17,424 — a 56% gap. **Why does bigha size vary?** It was never defined against a physical standard. It was defined against local measuring rods, which differed between revenue surveys. Last checked 2026-08-10. 1. **The bigha is uniform.** One katha is 720 sq ft and one bigha is 20 katha — 14,400 sq ft — nationwide. These are the same figures West Bengal uses, for the same historical reason. An acre holds 3.025 bigha or 60.5 katha. 2. **Official records do not use it.** Khatian, mutation and deed documents record area in shotangsho (decimal) and acres, never in katha or bigha. Land is sold in katha and recorded in decimal, and the two must be reconciled. 3. **The kani is the exception.** It genuinely varies by region — commonly 40 decimal in the Chittagong belt, 120 elsewhere.
