# Acre to Bigha > Free, state-aware calculator for converting between acre and bigha, the traditional Indian > land-area unit — plus a full state-by-state comparison of every commonly-cited ratio. ## The one fact that matters An acre is fixed worldwide at exactly 43,560 square feet. A **bigha is not standardised**. It is a customary unit whose size is set by state, and in several states by district. There is no official all-India bigha-to-acre figure, and any source that gives one has silently picked a single region's convention. The widely-repeated "1 acre = 1.6 bigha" is the North Indian pucca bigha of 27,225 sq ft. One acre is 1.6 bigha in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and pucca Rajasthan; 2 bigha in Punjab and Haryana; 2.5 bigha in Gujarat; 3.025 bigha in West Bengal and Assam; 3.63 bigha in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh; 5 bigha in Himachal Pradesh; and 6.4 bigha in the Uttarakhand hills. The correct answer always names a state. **How many acres is 1 bigha?** 0.625 acre in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and pucca Rajasthan; 0.5 acre in Punjab and Haryana; 0.4 acre in Gujarat; 0.331 acre in West Bengal and Assam; 0.275 acre in Madhya Pradesh; 0.2 acre in Himachal Pradesh; 0.156 acre in the Uttarakhand hills. **Is a bigha the same as an acre?** No. A bigha is smaller than an acre in every Indian state that uses it, and unlike the acre it is not standardised. An acre is fixed worldwide at exactly 43,560 square feet. **What is the difference between pucca and kaccha bigha?** Pucca is the larger, officially-recorded measure; kaccha is a smaller local one, typically a half or a third.
