Accuracy and methodology
Every figure on this site is a commonly-cited reference value, not a legal standard. There is no central Indian authority that publishes an official bigha-to-acre table, because the bigha is a customary unit rather than a statutory one.
We derive each state's ratio from its traditional definition in square yards, biswa, katha, kanal or guntha, then convert to square feet. That is why most of the numbers come out clean: 27,225 square feet is exactly 1.6 bigha to an acre, 21,780 is exactly 2, 8,712 is exactly 5. Where a state has more than one live convention, we list all of them instead of picking a favourite.

The details that trip people up
Pucca versus kaccha bigha
Pucca means the larger, officially-recorded measure; kaccha is a smaller local one, usually a half or a third. In Rajasthan the gap is 27,225 against 17,424 square feet. Ten bigha can mean two quite different plots.
Hill districts versus plains
In Uttarakhand a bigha is 6,806 square feet in Pauri and 17,424 in Haridwar. Same state, same word, two and a half times the land. Western and eastern Uttar Pradesh split the same way.
The sub-unit matters more than the bigha
Bihar and West Bengal both divide land into katha, but a Bihar bigha holds 20 katha and an Assam bigha holds 5. If a deal is quoted in katha, pin down the district's katha before anything else.
